The Other Day of Salvation
Eytan Kobre Seventeen-year-old Yanky Stein was at his best, energetically assisting in the massive cleanup at the Brooklyn Armory after thousands of Satmar chassidim had celebrated the group’s yearly Yom HaHatzolah the previous evening. But something went terribly wrong: the cherry-picker lift he was in suddenly wedged underneath a low-hanging balcony, pinning his neck like a hangman’s noose as he was suspended between life and death. A true story of faith and miracles.
The Age Of Income Envy
Shimmy Blum | Wednesday, January 25, 2012 When the Declaration of Independence referred to all men being created equal, it certainly wasn’t referring to how much money people could make. There have always been the wealthy, the poor, and those in-between, but never have those disparities entered the political discourse as they have today. Is there really a 1 percent versus the 99 percent? Is the $100,000-a-year salary a fantasy for this generation, or is there still an abundance of high-income opportunities?

Holy Outcast
Yair Weinstock | Wednesday, January 25, 2012 He spent his life in a hovel, appearing like a common laborer. But his eyes burned with a holy fire, and he was called a “malach” by the greatest mekubalim and tzaddikim of his generation. Who was Reb Yosef Dayan? Yair Weinstock lifts the veil of mystery from the man who brought the concept of davening at the graves of tzaddikim into the public’s consciousness.

Are You from Mars?
Eliyahu Ackerman | Wednesday, January 25, 2012 This is not the beginning of a joke. Three Russians, one Frenchman, one Spaniard, and one Chinese man cut themselves off from the world for a period of a year and a half. They lived in a room the size of a bus, breathed artificial air, subsisted on cans of preserves and recycled water, and spent their time performing futile tasks — all in the context of a mock flight to Mars. Russia is already seeking candidates for the next “flight.” Would you volunteer?

The sight of HaRav Shmuel Berenbaum, rosh yeshivah of the Mirrer Yeshivah, bent over his Gemara with a look of ecstasy on his face, is etched into the collective memory of the thousands of talmidim who loved him and learned from him. As Jews the world over mark the fourth yahrtzeit of this towering personality, his daughter, Rebbetzin Goldy Sorotzkin, shares cherished memories of life as his child.

For children born with hydranencephaly, a rare condition in which all or much of the brain is missing, the prognosis is usually gloomy — death by age one. But then there are children like four-year-old Natan Shai, who are beating all the odds and bringing great joy to their families.

You may think there’s not much gardening you can do in the winter, what with the earth covered in frost, perhaps even with snow. But here are some suggestions that will keep the greenest of fingers happy.

It Happened to Me!

I pressed the button on the double-doored fridge and four ice cubes shot out. I pressed the second button and filled my disposable cup with water. It’s a good thing that I like crunching on ice and that it’s not considered bad manners for a 12-year-old, because that’s the only thing I can eat when we meet up with our family at my grandfather’s house. You see, my grandfather doesn’t keep kosher.
